Catawba Culture, Pottery, and Folklore

Presented by Dr. Stephen Criswell, USC Lancaster

Indigenous artists from what is now known as the Catawba Nation have been continuously making hand-formed pottery from clay harvested around the Catawba River for over 6000 years.  This talk will introduce the audience to Catawba Nation pottery, its history, traditional forms, and selected artists.  Dr. Criswell is a folklorist, English professor, and the Director of the USC Lancaster Native American Studies Center.  He has worked with Catawba potters for the past twenty-five years.
