SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning
DESCRIPTION:Empowering Communities: How Electric Cooperatives Transformed Rural South Carolina\nPresented by Dr. Lacy K. Ford\, University of South Carolina \nEarly in the twentieth century\, for-profit companies such as Duke Power and South Carolina Electric and Gas brought electricity to populous cities and towns across South Carolina\, while rural areas remained in the dark. It was not until the advent of publicly owned electric cooperatives in the 1930s that the South Carolina countryside was gradually introduced to the conveniences of life with electricity. Today\, electric cooperatives serve more than a quarter of South Carolina’s citizens and more than seventy percent of the state’s land area\, bringing not only power but also high-speed broadband to rural communities. \nThe rise of “public” power—electricity serviced by member-owned cooperatives and sanctioned by federal and state legislation—is a complicated saga encompassing politics\, law\, finance\, and rural economic development. Empowering Communities examines how the cooperatives helped bring fundamental and transformational change to the lives of rural people in South Carolina\, from light to broadband. \nDr. Lacy Ford served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences\, USC’s largest and oldest college\, July 2016 to December 2020.   Prior to becoming Dean\, Ford served as Senior Vice Provost & Dean of Graduate Studies at the USC from 2010-2016. He is the author of Deliver Us From Evil: The Slavery Question in the Old South and a number of articles on the history of the South. He coauthored Empowering Communities: How Electric Cooperatives Transformed Rural South Carolina with Jared Bailey. \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLunchbox Learning is generously sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Away From Home: Native American Boarding Schools
DESCRIPTION:Away From Home: Native American Boarding Schools\nAugust 31\, 2024 – October 20\, 2024 \nAway From Home: American Indian Boarding School Stories\, a National Endowment for the Humanities national traveling exhibition\, will make its only South Carolina stop at the Upcountry History Museum\, August 31 – October 20\, 2024. \nBeginning in the 1870s\, the US government attempted to educate and assimilate Native Americans into “civilized” society by placing children – of all ages\, from thousands of homes and hundreds of diverse tribes – in distant\, residential boarding schools.  Many were forcibly taken from their families and communities and stripped of all signs of their culture\, even forbidden to speak their own language among themselves. \nUp until the 1930s\, students were trained for domestic work and trade in a highly regimented environment.  Many children went years without familial contact\, and these events had a lasting\, generational impact. \nSome suffered in silence\, some struggled bitterly\, some succumbed to physical abuse\, Tuberculosis or Influenza and lost their lives.  Others flourished and built a new sense of self within a wider world\, while preserving their identity in their hearts. \nThe 2000 square foot exhibition explores the off-reservation boarding schools through a kaleidoscope of first-person voices.  Stories of student resistance\, accommodation\, creative resolve\, devoted participation\, escape and faith in oneself and heritage\, speak individually across eras.  Visitors will explore photographs\, artwork\, objects\, interviews\, interactive timelines and immersive environments\, including classroom and dormitory settings. \nBoarding schools were designed to remake Native Americans\, but it was Native Americans who changed the schools.  The exhibit also examines these unintended outcomes\, such as a sense of “Pan-Indianism\,” the growth of support networks on campuses\, and the demand for reform by advocates. Following graduation\, many students became involved in tribal political offices\, the formation of civil rights\, and Native sovereignty organizations. \nSupport provided by \n                   \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning
DESCRIPTION:Where Have All the Children Gone?\nThe Catawba Nation and the Carlisle Indian School \n  \nPresented by Alan Dabney\nU.S. Veteran and Advisor of the Catawba Indian Nation \n  \nIn the 1870s\, the United States government attempted to educate and assimilate Native Americans into “civilized” society by placing children from diverse tribes into distant\, residential boarding schools. Forced into a world that deprived them of their language\, contact with their families\, and their ethnic identity\, many struggled\, suffered physical abuse\, found ways to escape\, or developed faith in self and heritage. \nOne such school was the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. It served as a model for the other off-reservation schools built across the country. “Where Have All the Children Gone? – The Catawba and the Carlisle Indian School” is the story of one child’s journey as a student of the Carlisle School as told by his great-grandson\, Alan Dabney. Through first-hand accounts and letters\, Alan will present his great-grandfather’s experiences of daily life at Carlisle\, the escape attempts\, and finally being able to leave when he turned 18. \nAlan is the Director of Greenville County Veterans Affairs and a member of the Catawba Indian Nation where he also serves as Veteran Advisor of the Catawba Indian Nation in Rock Hill. A seventh-generation soldier with ancestors serving in every major military conflict dating to the American Revolution\, Alan retired as a Master Sergeant from the Army after 21 years. \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLunchbox Learning is generously sponsored by:

SUMMARY:POSTPONED-Revolution in the Carolinas
DESCRIPTION:This lecture has been postponed due to the effects of Hurricane Helene.\nThe Grim Years: Settling South Carolina\, 1670-1720\nPresented by Dr. John Navin\, Coastal Carolina University \nAs the thirteen colonies were established in the “New World” the roots of the American Revolution were planted. The vast colony of Carolina\, divided in 1710 into North and South Carolina\, saw rapid transformation in its early years. Issues arose with the English Lords Proprietors\, trade with Native American tribes was lucrative but deadly for both sides\, and the growing slave trade at the Port of Charles Town led to an economic dependence on slave labor. It was in South Carolina’s infancy that religious\, political\, and economic turmoil laid the groundwork for the American Revolution. \nDr. John Navin earned his master’s degree at Boston College and his Ph.D. at Brandeis University. A Boston native\, John Navin joined the History department at Coastal Carolina University in 1999. He previously taught at Brandeis and Pfeiffer Universities. A specialist in Early American history\, Navin has published works that focus on race\, warfare\, gender\, and the impact of colonizing ventures on groups and individuals. In 2020\, he published The Grim Years: Settling South Carolina\, 1670-1720. \n \n  \n  \nRevolution in the Carolinas is generously sponsored by:\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning
DESCRIPTION:The Hidden History of the Dark Corner\nPresented by Drew Hines\n  \nThe Dark Corner is a region shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Both the oldest standing bridge and the only remaining covered bridge in South Carolina are found in the Dark Corner. An exclusive country club with a world-class golf course once stood on the craggy peaks of Hogback Mountain until the Great Depression forced its closure. The ghostly remains of the Blue Ridge Forest Resort can still be seen there today. The only person ever to die on the witness stand in Greenville County was Dark Corner resident “Big Alec” Campbell. A Shootout at a Baptist church high atop Glassy Mountain in 1891 exceeded the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral in the number of shots fired. Drew Hines details these stories and more in his book Hidden History of the Dark Corner. \nDrew Hines is a native of Greensboro\, North Carolina\, but has spent most of his life in the upstate of South Carolina. A Baptist minister for forty-three years\, he is now retired and enjoys writing\, gardening\, and traveling. He received his undergraduate degree at the University of South Carolina\, and two advanced degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville\, KY. \n \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLunchbox Learning is generously sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Black Pioneers: Legacy In The American West
DESCRIPTION:Black Pioneers: Legacy In The American West\nOctober 26\, 2024 – March 2\, 2025 \n“When thinking about the American Wild West\, many imagine characters from a classic western movie. But the reality is\, the West is – and was – a melting pot. This ground-breaking exhibit fills in the mostly missing historical record of Black people in 19th-century America.” \n                                                                                                                             – Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi \nThe Upcountry History Museum will invite visitors to experience a first-of-its kind exhibit when it hosts Black Pioneers: Legacy in the American West. The national touring exhibit\, organized by The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art\, St. Petersburg\, FL and Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi\, artist\, renowned historian and one of the foremost experts on African American quilting history and traditions\, explores Black history in the American West. \nThe exhibit follows the path of Black history in the West through a timeline of original pictorial quilts. These colorful\, richly detailed works of art chronicle the arrival of Africans in the American West in 1528\, all the way through the Civil Rights Movement\, bringing to life forgotten stories and lesser-known chapters in history. Dispelling the myth that Black people in the old West were mostly cowboys\, Black Pioneers reveals the breadth of their occupations and achievements in society\, religion\, education\, and the arts. \nQuilts were chosen as the visual medium for the exhibit to highlight the intersections of African Americans in the Western Frontier while informing visitors about the art form and its important role in African American history. For African American women\, quilts have always been at the core of artistic expression\, taking form in the social\, economic\, and spiritual lives of the women who make them. \nThe 50 quilts\, designed for the exhibit\, were created by the Women of Color Quilters Network (WCQN) especially for the exhibition. Each quilt features a different Black pioneer\, their life story researched and depicted in fabric by the quilt’s creator. \nFounded by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi in 1985\, WCQN is a non-profit national organization whose mission is to educate\, preserve\, exhibit\, promote and document quilts made by African Americans. \n  \nSupport provided by \n                         \n

SUMMARY:Revolution in the Carolinas
DESCRIPTION:Crescent Moon Over Carolina: William Moultrie and American Liberty \nPresented by C.L. Bragg\nMajor General William Moultrie is best remembered for commanding the valiant defense of an unfinished palmetto log fort on Sullivan’s Island at the entrance to Charleston harbor against a determined British naval attack on June 28\, 1776. While the Continental Congress in Philadelphia considered a draft of the Declaration of Independence\, Moultrie and his garrison of South Carolinians proved that untested\, but courageous\, American soldiers could stand firm and prevail against British might. \nDr. C.L. Bragg is a practicing anesthesiologist in Thomasville\, Georgia. His love for American history was sparked while researching his family’s history in South Carolina. He has published multiple books including Distinction in Every Service: Brigadier General Marcellus A. Stovall\, C.S.A.\, the critically acclaimed Never for Want of Powder: The Confederate Powder Works in Augusta\, Georgia\, of which he is coauthor\, and Crescent Moon over Carolina: William Moultrie and American Liberty. \n \n  \n  \n\nRevolution in the Carolinas is generously sponsored by:\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
