SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning with Bob Dotson
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 16 at Noon\nPresenter: Bob Dotson \nTopic: “An Interview with Florence Thompson\, the Migrant Mother” \nThe museum’s Masters of American Photography exhibition features one of the best known images on earth — the Migrant Mother — Dorothea Lange’s iconic photograph of a woman struggling to survive.  Many of us have seen that picture\, but few know the mother’s story.  At the start of the Great Depression\, Florence Thompson had five children\, was pregnant with another and her husband had just died.  She did not talk publicly about that dark time for 50 years\, until the day Bob Dotson stopped to listen — and learned how to survive. \nJoin Bob on Wednesday\, June 16th\, here at the museum or virtually for the story behind that iconic photo.  \nBob Dotson has crisscrossed this country\, more than four million miles\, searching for people who change our lives\, but don’t take time to tell us about it.  His long-running series\, “The American Story” was a regular feature on the NBC TODAY Show for 40 years.  He is now a New York Times best selling author. Dotson’s stories have earned 120 awards\, making him one of the most honored storytellers of our time. \n  \nLunchbox Learning is free for UHM Members and included with general admission for all other guests attending in person. \n  \nTo attend the program virtually\, cost is free for UHM Members and $5.00 for all other guests. \n  \n  \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Masters of American Photography
DESCRIPTION:May 1 – August 8\, 2021\nA picture is worth a thousand words\, or so the saying goes\, and the 24 images on display in Masters of American Photography\, takes visitors on a pictorial journey that traces the history of photography from the mid-19th century to the 20th century. \n\nFrom Ansel Adams\, Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans to Alfred Stieglitz\, Paul Strand and Margaret Bourke-White\, the range of these notable photographers underscores the influence each had on the Pictorialism movement which sought to elevate the status of photography to a fine art. Themes such as portraiture\, landscape\, cityscape\, still life\, motion capture\, and cultural history are explored in an impressive array of works by these most important artists in the chronicles of photography. \nExamining the advent of photography from the 1880s through the 1980s\, Masters focuses on the extraordinary fervor that surrounded the innovation of this newest medium of visual representation. Emphasizing the experimental nature and evolution of photographic techniques through this time period\, this unique exhibition showcases some of the photographs made during the Great Depression to call attention to the challenges of rural poverty\, as well as the impact on the people whose lives were now documented as part of the collective record of the artform and its noted accounts of those moments. \nOn display through August 8\, 2021\, Masters of American Photography is filled with opportunities for visitors to explore an extraordinary time in the early history of what has not only become a profession and hobby\, but a passion and art form for so many. \nThis definitive collection\, comprised of many vintage prints\, was organized by the Reading Public Museum in Reading\, Pennsylvania. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Framed: Step into Art OPENS
DESCRIPTION:Upcountry History Museum’s Newest Exhibition Brings Art to Life   \n‘Framed: Step into Art’ Turns Famous Paintings into Lifesize Experiences \n  \n \n             \nGreenville\, S.C. – They say life imitates art\, but what if art becomes life? Find out in Framed: Step into Art\, the newest exhibition coming to the Upcountry History Museum\, a Smithsonian Affiliate\, as visitors can actually step into famous paintings\, be transported to another time\, and experience art like never before beginning Saturday\, February 27\, 2021. \nThis bilingual (English and Spanish) exhibition creates immersive STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Art and Math) learning environments filled with distinctively interactive experiences as visitors step through oversized frames into a three-dimensional\, sensory world that transforms the works of well-known painters into activities and conversational prompts that employ visual thinking strategies which help art and make-believe come alive. \nOn display through May 23\, 2021\, Framed is filled with opportunities for children and families to explore works of art in four discovery spaces that include setting up camp in the Canadian Rockies during 1916 at John Singer Sargent’s Camp at Lake O’Hara; taking the reins of a giant chicken pulling a wagon carrying a load to town in Clementine Hunter’s Big Chicken; learning about rural life at the turn of the century by tending chickens and eggs\, preparing a meal and setting the dining table for a noontime dinner in Grant Wood’s Dinner for Threshers; and traveling south of the border to add flowers and ribbons of “corn husks” to the flower tower for a celebration in  Diego Rivera’s Corn Festival from the Court of Fiestas in Mexico City’s Ministry of Education Building. \nDesigned for children ages 3 to 12\, this unique exhibition encourages them to ask questions and find answers through the exploration of art\, as well as recognize art as a tool for expression\, understanding and an important aspect of life. \nThe Upcountry History Museum is located at 540 Buncombe St.\, in Greenville\, S.C. SUMMARY:Framed Step Into Art
DESCRIPTION:The Upcountry History Museum will continue its mission of connecting young audiences with hands-on STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Art and Math) learning experiences when it hosts Framed: Step Into Art. \nThe bilingual (English and Spanish)\, exhibition transforms the works of well-known painters into interactive environments. Children ages 3-12\, enter the exhibit by stepping though an oversized frame and are immersed in the worlds created by well-known artists. Each work is re-created as a three-dimensional\, sensory\, walk-in environment that includes a print of the artist’s original work as well as important facts about the artist’s life and painting style. \nSupporting the National Standards for Arts Education for K through 5th grade\, the exhibit provides conversational prompts that employ visual thinking strategies. Children explore the works of four specific artists\, as well as enter a Mona Lisa Gallery where they discover a print of the original painting along with famous parodies\, and step behind a a cutout version replacing Mona Lisa’s face with their own. \n  \nThe exhibition’s four interactive spaces include: \n  \n\nDinner for Threshers by Grant Wood explores rural life at the turn of the century inviting children to tend to the chickens and eggs\, prepare a seasonal meal\, set the table\, and mix and match the farmers patterned shirts. \n  \n  \n  \n\n\nCamp at Lake O’Hara by John Singer Sargent invites visitors to Sargent’s 1916 camp in the Canadian Rockies. Children climb inside a tent\, explore camping gear like Sargent’s\, prepare a meal over the campfire\, and create a painting of what today’s campsite might look like. \n  \n  \n  \n\n\nCorn Festival by Diego Rivera visitors travel to Mexico through this piece from the Court of Fiestas in the Ministry of Education Building in Mexico City. Children explore a rendition of one of Rivera’s frescos\, add flowers and ribbons to the flower tower for a celebration and add their flourish to a miniature building mural. \n  \n  \n  \n\n\nBig Chicken by Clementine O’Hara visitors meet Louisiana’s most famous female artist and folk-art icon and create imaginary animals like Hunter’s “goosters”! Children load the cart and climb behind the reins of Hunter’s giant rooster to take the load into town. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nIn addition to climbing inside works of art\, children are invited to curate their own exhibit gallery\, draw self-portraits\, take part in an art/history hunt through the exhibit and create different images at a three-dimensional pattern puzzle. \n
