SUMMARY:Vietnam: The Real War Photographs from the Associated Press
DESCRIPTION:May 28\, 2022 – August 20\, 2022\nThe Vietnam War (1954-1975) was a long\, costly and divisive conflict that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its principal ally\, the United States.  The conflict was intensified by the ongoing Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.  More than 3 million people (including over 58\,000 Americans) were killed in the Vietnam War\, and more than half of the dead were Vietnamese civilians.\n\n\nU.S. Marines move through a landing zone\, December 1969. (AP Photo) \n\n  \nThe war left a deep and lasting impression in American life\, from its impact on the men and women who fought in it\, to the journalists and photographers who covered it\, to the millions of Americans who protested against it or supported it. Due to an uncensored press\, the world knew and saw more of this war than any in history before or since.\n  \nTo cover the War\, The Associated Press (AP) gathered an extraordinary group of superb photojournalists in its Saigon bureau\, creating one of the greatest photographic legacies of the 20th century.  The AP won six Pulitzer Prizes for its coverage\, four of them for photography.\n  \nNow\, drawn from AP’s photo history of the conflict\, Vietnam: The Real War\, featuring a selection of 50 large-format images curated by the Associated Press\, will be presented at the Upcountry History Museum.  The exhibition tells the human story of the War\, from the American presence starting as a trickle of military advisers in the late 1950s\, through dramatic operations involving thousands of soldiers in the 1960s\, to the fall of Saigon in 1975. These are pictures that both recorded and made history\, taken by courageous photojournalists.\n  \nAs we begin to look back from the vantage point of half a century\, Vietnam: The Real War serves as a photographic record of the drama and tragedy of the Vietnam War.\n  \nThe Upcountry History Museum will include objects\, archival materials and oral histories from its permanent collection to support and further illustrate the impact of the Vietnam War.  The Museum will partner with Upstate veterans and military organizations to insure the preservation and presentation of our community’s history and stories.\n  \nThe Associated Press (AP) is a not-for-profit global news agency headquartered in New York.  Founded in 1846\, the AP today is the essential global news network\, delivering fast\, unbiased news and information from every corner of the world to media platforms and formats.\nSponsored by:\n                      \n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:June 11\, 2022 – January 22\, 2023\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDinosaurs will roar into the Upstate South Carolina\, when the Upcountry History Museum presents Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice. Crossing the threshold of this interactive exhibition means traveling back in time to explore the Age of the Dinosaurs.\n  \n\nDinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice is the first child-centered exhibit in the country dedicated to expanding the understanding of dinosaurs and their habitats. Designed for young explorers\, ages 3-10\, the bilingual (Spanish and English) exhibit features three distinct sections that build on a child’s innate curiosity about dinosaurs: Land of Fire (a warm dinosaur habitat)\, Land of Ice (a cold dinosaur habitat)\, and a Field Research Station (complete with a Big Dig experience).\n  \nThe steamy Land of Fire\, present day Montana\, introduces visitors to the Triceratops\, T-Rex and the dinosaurs who called this environment home. Children can circle the land in insect costumes\, buzz through a volcano with oozing lava\, work through a swampy bog and identify an ecosystem of animals and plants.\n  \nNo coats are needed for a trip across the Land of Ice where visitors meet the dinosaurs who made their homes in the cold climate of Alaska. Activities include: climbing rocky steps\, breezing down an icy slide\, and hopping across stepping stones in an icy river.\n  \nIn the hands-on Field Research Station children and their caregivers don goggles and research vests\, as they uncover dinosaur bones in a dig station and examine fossils to identify dinosaurs.\n  \nThe exhibit builds on the popular fascination with dinosaurs and includes science\, history\, and literacy based activities to challenge all ages. SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning - The Lynching of Willie Earle
DESCRIPTION:  \nConfronting Racism: The Lynching of Willie Earle \nPresented by Dr. William H. Willimon\, Duke Divinity School \nThis year marked the 75th anniversary of the Greenville\, South Carolina lynching of Willie Earle. Based on circumstantial evidence\, Earle\, a 24-year-old Black man\, was charged in the robbery and murder of Greenville cab driver\, Thomas Watson Brown. Upon his arrest\, a mob of taxi drivers drove to the jail\, forcibly procured Earle’s release\, then beat\, stabbed\, and shot him to death. The trial\, which gained national media attention\, resulted in the acquittal of 31 white men who had been charged with Earle’s murder. The death of Willie Earle would become known as South Carolina’s last recorded lynching. \nDr. William Willimon was a 1968 Wofford graduate\, former dean of Duke Chapel\, current professor of Christian ministry at Duke University\, and author of\, “Who Lynched Willie Earle: Preaching to Confront Racism.” Join Dr. Willimon on Wednesday\, July 20\, as he discusses the lynching of Willie Earle\, the subsequent trial\, and the continuing challenge of preaching to confront racism. \n  \nLunchbox Learning is free for UHM Members and included with general admission for all other guests. \n  \n\n \n\n  \n \n  \n\n\n\n  \nLunchbox Learning is generously sponsored by:

However\, not all music shared this anti-war sentiment. The music of Merle Haggard and other country artists was often considered pro-war. \nDr. McCoy’s program will give an overview of different genres of music from the Viet Nam war era. SUMMARY:Fast Lane: The NASCAR Photography of Darryl Moran
DESCRIPTION:September 3 – November 5\, 2022\nSpeed\, action\, danger\, corporate logos\, pop icons – these are the defining elements of Darryl Moran’s stock car racing photographs. The first official photographer hired by NASCAR Moran was responsible for capturing all aspects of the races from 1993 to 1997.\n\nDarryl Moran’s images depict the frantic pace of race day as well as the camaraderie of the drivers\, intimate moments with fans and family members\, and the support and spirit of the pit crew. During his tenure\, the self-taught artist captured such legendary drivers as Dale Earnhardt\, Rusty Wallace\, Jeff Gordon\, Mark Martin\, Terry Labonte\, Tammy Jo Kirk\, and Harry Gant. \nMoran’s pictures were some of the first to capture the emotion of the races and the compassion of the drivers and fans. His images\, taken initially for his own interests\, caught the eye of NASCAR executives\, who felt that they signaled a new direction for the sport’s image\, one that focused on a broader scope of experiences and not just the technicality of the race and its winners. Through photographs\, memorabilia\, and objects\, the exhibition explores Moran’s development of this new vision of NASCAR\, one that continues to shape the images of the sport today. \nThe exhibition also examines Moran’s role as a NASCAR photographer\, including taking all the gear needed for the day – cameras\, multiple lenses\, water bottles\, batteries\, media cards\, and more. NASCAR photographers move rapidly from the media center to the garage\, to the track\, and to the winner’s circle. After the first practice ends its back to the media center to process images\, transmit them\, and rest for a few minutes before heading to the garage or track to start all over. When there is a full-race the cycle repeats itself – when the race ends it’s a rush to the winner’s circle to get the best spot for a photo of the winner. And finally\, it is back to the media center to transmit images to the various media outlets. \nIn its commitment to connecting Upstate local history with national and global history\, the Upcountry History Museum will share the story of Greenville Pickens Speedway which started as a dirt track in 1940. After thirty years on dirt\, the Speedway was paved in 1970. On April 10\, 1971\, Greenville Pickens Speedway hosted the first-ever\, start to finish\, live televised NASCAR Race. Since then\, hundreds of sanctioned NASCAR races have taken place at the Speedway. Though the cars and drivers have changed\, the legacy and thrill of racing continues. \n

DESCRIPTION:“Call My Name\, Clemson”\nDr. Rhondda Robinson Thomas\, Clemson University\nDr. Rhondda Robinson Thomas is an associate professor of English at Clemson University with a research focus on early African-American literature.  Dr. Thomas received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities\, funding a fellowship focused on recording oral histories\, digitizing archival records\, and preserving the history of African-Americans and the legacy of slavery in Clemson\, South Carolina\, and at Clemson University. Her research developed into a community project\, which brought together the voices of the past with those of Clemson students and alumni to gain a better understanding of race and culture throughout the university’s history. Since receiving this grant\, Dr. Thomas has digitized over 2000 primary source documents relating to this history. She will present her research from this public history project and her book “Call My Name\, Clemson” at the Upcountry History Museum’s September Lunchbox Learning program on September 14\, 2022.
