SUMMARY:"Meltdown in Dixie" - Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Meltdown in Dixie \n Film Screening & Panel Discussion\n  \nIn the wake of the 2015 Charleston Massacre\, a battle erupts in Orangeburg\, South Carolina\, between the Sons of Confederate Veterans and an ice cream shop owner forced to fly the Confederate flag in his parking lot. The film explores the broader role of Confederate symbolism in the 21st century and the lingering racial oppression which symbols such as this help maintain.\n  \nDirected by Orangeburg\, S.C. native Emily Harrold\, Meltdown in Dixie explores the broader role of Confederate symbolism in the 21st century through a local look at a battle over a flag flying outside the Edisto River Creamery. The film follows the owner of the Creamery as he tries to bring the flag down. Countering this\, the film also profiles the local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans\, who want to keep the flag flying. \n  \n\n  \nAfter the 40-minute film screening\, the Upcountry History Museum will host a panel discussion. All attendees are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the discussion. \n  \nThe discussion will be moderated by SC Humanities Scholar\, Efia Nwangaza. Ms. Nwangaza\, civil/human rights attorney\, is the Executive Director of the Malcolm X Center for Self Determination and the founder and director of the Afrikan-American Institute for Policy Studies and Planning in Greenville\, SC. Joining the panel discussion will be Dr. Sherry Kostman\, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in South Carolina. Dr. Kostman is currently Behavioral Health Director for New Horizon Family Health Services\, a federally qualified health center in Greenville\, SC. Also joining the panel discussion will be the film director and Orangeburg\, SC native\, Emily Harrold. \n  \nWatch “Meltdown in Dixie” Trailer \n  \nAdmission for the film screening and panel discussion is free for all guests\, however reservations are encouraged. \n\n  \n\nThis event is apart of a series of public screenings of “Meltdown in Dixie” organized by the Center for Creative Partnerships at the SC Humanities. The mission of SC Humanities is to enrich the cultural and intellectual lives of all South Carolinians. Established in 1973\, this 501(c) 3 organization is governed by a volunteer 20-member Board of Directors comprised of community leaders from throughout the state. It presents and/or supports literary initiatives\, lectures\, exhibits\, festivals\, publications\, oral history projects\, videos and other humanities-based experiences that directly or indirectly reach more than 250\,000 citizens annually.

DESCRIPTION:“Call My Name\, Clemson”\nDr. Rhondda Robinson Thomas\, Clemson University\nDr. Rhondda Robinson Thomas is an associate professor of English at Clemson University with a research focus on early African-American literature.  Dr. Thomas received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities\, funding a fellowship focused on recording oral histories\, digitizing archival records\, and preserving the history of African-Americans and the legacy of slavery in Clemson\, South Carolina\, and at Clemson University. Her research developed into a community project\, which brought together the voices of the past with those of Clemson students and alumni to gain a better understanding of race and culture throughout the university’s history. Since receiving this grant\, Dr. Thomas has digitized over 2000 primary source documents relating to this history. She will present her research from this public history project and her book “Call My Name\, Clemson” at the Upcountry History Museum’s September Lunchbox Learning program on September 14\, 2022.

From the anti-war sentiments of the early classic rock groups like The Animals to the folk music of Bob Dylan\, music served as a forum to express the national discontent with American involvement in Viet Nam. However\, not all music shared this anti-war sentiment. The music of Merle Haggard and other country artists was often considered pro-war. \nDr. McCoy’s program will give an overview of different genres of music from the Viet Nam war era. SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning - The Lynching of Willie Earle
DESCRIPTION:  \nConfronting Racism: The Lynching of Willie Earle \nPresented by Dr. William H. Willimon\, Duke Divinity School \nThis year marked the 75th anniversary of the Greenville\, South Carolina lynching of Willie Earle. Based on circumstantial evidence\, Earle\, a 24-year-old Black man\, was charged in the robbery and murder of Greenville cab driver\, Thomas Watson Brown. Upon his arrest\, a mob of taxi drivers drove to the jail\, forcibly procured Earle’s release\, then beat\, stabbed\, and shot him to death. The trial\, which gained national media attention\, resulted in the acquittal of 31 white men who had been charged with Earle’s murder. The death of Willie Earle would become known as South Carolina’s last recorded lynching. \nDr. William Willimon was a 1968 Wofford graduate\, former dean of Duke Chapel\, current professor of Christian ministry at Duke University\, and author of\, “Who Lynched Willie Earle: Preaching to Confront Racism.” Join Dr. Willimon on Wednesday\, July 20\, as he discusses the lynching of Willie Earle\, the subsequent trial\, and the continuing challenge of preaching to confront racism. \n  \nLunchbox Learning is free for UHM Members and included with general admission for all other guests. \n  \n\n \n\n  \n \n  \n\n\n\n  \nLunchbox Learning is generously sponsored by:

DESCRIPTION:  \nTopic: Alamo of the Pacific: The Battle of Wake Island \nPresenter: Major Ralph Stoney Bates\, Sr.\, USMC (Ret) \nDuring the darkest and most frightening days of World War II\, a handful of United States Marines\, joined by a small group of Guam Chamorro Pan American Airways employees and a hundred or so volunteer civilian construction workers of Morrison Knudsen Engineering\, stopped a Japanese invasion fleet in its tracks. They also shot down a couple dozen or more Japanese aircraft\, sank a few Japanese warships\, repelled the first invasion attempt\, and made a second invasion landing force pay an incredibly high price to take control of an advanced naval base by the name of Wake Island. \nDuring those fifteen days\, Major James P.S.
