SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning with Dr. Vernon Burton
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Vernon Burton\, Clemson University \nTopic: Justice Deferred: Race and the Supreme Court \nFrom the Cherokee Trail of Tears to Brown v. Board of Education to the dismantling of the Voting Rights Act\, historian Orville Vernon Burton shines a powerful light on the Court’s race record during the short period spanning the 1930s through the early 1970s. Much of the fragility of civil rights in America is due to the Supreme Court\, but as this sweeping history also reminds us\, the justices still have the power to make good on the country’s promise of equal rights for all. \nLunchbox Learning is free for UHM Members and included with general admission for all other guests. \n  \nUpcoming Lunchbox Learning programs: \n\nOctober 13 – Even as We Breathe with Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle\nNovember 10 – War Dogs: Never Below You\, Never Above You\, Always Beside You with Julie Schrock & Chris Willingham\nDecember 15 – Home for the Holidays with the Norman Rockwell Museum\n\n  \n\n  \nLunchbox Learning is generously sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning with Bob Dotson
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 16 at Noon\nPresenter: Bob Dotson \nTopic: “An Interview with Florence Thompson\, the Migrant Mother” \nThe museum’s Masters of American Photography exhibition features one of the best known images on earth — the Migrant Mother — Dorothea Lange’s iconic photograph of a woman struggling to survive.  Many of us have seen that picture\, but few know the mother’s story.  At the start of the Great Depression\, Florence Thompson had five children\, was pregnant with another and her husband had just died.  She did not talk publicly about that dark time for 50 years\, until the day Bob Dotson stopped to listen — and learned how to survive. \nJoin Bob on Wednesday\, June 16th\, here at the museum or virtually for the story behind that iconic photo.  \nBob Dotson has crisscrossed this country\, more than four million miles\, searching for people who change our lives\, but don’t take time to tell us about it.  His long-running series\, “The American Story” was a regular feature on the NBC TODAY Show for 40 years.  He is now a New York Times best selling author. Dotson’s stories have earned 120 awards\, making him one of the most honored storytellers of our time. \n  \nLunchbox Learning is free for UHM Members and included with general admission for all other guests attending in person. \n  \nTo attend the program virtually\, cost is free for UHM Members and $5.00 for all other guests. \n  \n  \n\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:June 5 – September 19\, 2021\nThe bilingual exhibition (English and Spanish) is a unique and educational experience that emphasizes the importance of reading and the significance of fairy tales throughout history. From an African jungle to a giant’s castle\, visitors explore larger-than-life pages of six of the world’s most famous fairy tales: Anansi and the Talking Melon (Ghana)\, Beauty and the Beast (France)\, Jack and the Beanstalk (England)\, Cinderella (France\, China)\, The Elves and the Shoemaker (Germany)\, and Lon Po Po (aka: Little Red Riding Hood\, China).\nEntering the exhibit via a magical portal\, visitors will be surrounded by an enchanting storybook kingdom. Each tale is brought to life through its own large-scale environment\, interactive components\, and costumes.\nWith seven storybook settings designed for children ages 3-10 years old and their caregivers\, Once Upon A Time will take traditional story time to a new interactive level. The result is a three-dimensional\, fully developed world that resonates with young visitors\, while still appealing to the grown-ups in their lives who are just as fond of the beloved stories that were a major part of their own childhood.

SUMMARY:Masters of American Photography
DESCRIPTION:May 1 – August 8\, 2021\nA picture is worth a thousand words\, or so the saying goes\, and the 24 images on display in Masters of American Photography\, takes visitors on a pictorial journey that traces the history of photography from the mid-19th century to the 20th century. \n\nFrom Ansel Adams\, Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans to Alfred Stieglitz\, Paul Strand and Margaret Bourke-White\, the range of these notable photographers underscores the influence each had on the Pictorialism movement which sought to elevate the status of photography to a fine art. Themes such as portraiture\, landscape\, cityscape\, still life\, motion capture\, and cultural history are explored in an impressive array of works by these most important artists in the chronicles of photography. \nExamining the advent of photography from the 1880s through the 1980s\, Masters focuses on the extraordinary fervor that surrounded the innovation of this newest medium of visual representation. Emphasizing the experimental nature and evolution of photographic techniques through this time period\, this unique exhibition showcases some of the photographs made during the Great Depression to call attention to the challenges of rural poverty\, as well as the impact on the people whose lives were now documented as part of the collective record of the artform and its noted accounts of those moments. \nOn display through August 8\, 2021\, Masters of American Photography is filled with opportunities for visitors to explore an extraordinary time in the early history of what has not only become a profession and hobby\, but a passion and art form for so many. \nThis definitive collection\, comprised of many vintage prints\, was organized by the Reading Public Museum in Reading\, Pennsylvania. \n  \n
