DESCRIPTION:Native American Medicines of the Southeast\n  \nPresented by Mark Warren\nThe diverse flora of the Southeast once provided everything that was needed by the original inhabitants. Our modern day ignoring of these gifts is what separates us from a life of truly interacting with nature on an intimate level. And that loss has\, no doubt\, contributed to our careless handling of the land. The good news is that this trend can be reversed\, one person at a time. This program covers plants that may be used for common ailments\, ranging from minor cuts\, stings\, head lice\, and rashes to gall stones\, dysentery\, nausea\, and skin cancer. Techniques for field preparations are included. \nMark Warren is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Georgia. At Medicine Bow\, his nationally renowned wilderness school in the Southern Appalachians\, he teaches nature classes and primitive survival skills. Warren has written extensively about nature for local and national magazines. He lectures on Native American history and survival skills\, and Western frontier history presenting at museums and cultural centers around the country. He is the recipient of the 2024 New Mexico – Arizona Book Award for his historical novel on Billy the Kid\, A Last Serenade for Billy Bonney. His Wyatt Earp\, An American Odyssey trilogy was honored by WWA’s Spur Awards\, The Historical Novel Society\, and the 2020 Will Rogers Medallion Awards. Warren is a 2022 Georgia Author of the Year recipient for his book Song of the Horseman (Finalist\, Literary Fiction). Indigo Heaven\, The Westering Trail Travesties\, and Nate\, The Texas Story are all Will Rogers Medallion Award winners. Join us for a firsthand look at the realities of daily life in the 1940s and 1950s\, bringing to life the sights\, sounds\, joys\, and hardships of growing up in a the mill town. \nLarry Candler grew in the small textile village of Lockhart\, SC. Upon graduation from Clemson in 1963 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering\, he and his wife moved to Huntsville\, Alabama where he worked in the aerospace industry. He and his wife moved to Greenville in 1966 where he worked as a consulting engineer for 41 years. After he retired\, he became a member of OLLI\, the Furman learning community\, where learning never stops. DESCRIPTION:A 10-month lecture series meeting on the first Tuesday at 5:30 PM of the listed months below.\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin historian Durant Ashmore in an engaging lecture series that explores the American Revolutionary War through the lens of South Carolina’s Backcountry\, a region whose people\, terrain\, and battles played a critical role in the struggle for independence. While often overshadowed by events in the northern colonies\, the Backcountry was a contested and volatile landscape where Loyalists\, Patriots\, and British forces clashed in brutal and decisive engagements. \nDrawing on primary sources\, battlefield archaeology\, and recent scholarship\, Durant Ashmore will examine key battles of the Backcountry\, the leaders and dedicated militia who fought them\, and the civilian populations often caught in the middle. DESCRIPTION:The Upcountry History Museum is proud to be the Upstate’s only venue for the display of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History (SCDAH) exhibit\, Foundations of a Revolution: South Carolina\, 1775-1777\, on Thursday\, April 23\, 2026\, from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. \nOn display will be three of the state’s original founding documents from the American Revolution. They are the 1775 Articles of Association for the District East of the Wateree\, the South Carolina Constitution of 1776\, and the 1777 Treaty of DeWitt’s Corner.\nThese documents are part of the vast collection documenting the history of South Carolina held by the SCDAH and are seldom placed on public display.\nDr. W. Eric Emerson\, SCDAH Agency Director\, State Historic Preservation Officer\, and State Archivist\, remarked that “the S.C. Department of Archives and History has a long tradition of making South Carolina’s historic records available to the public. The 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding is an excellent time to educate South Carolinians about their state’s crucial role in the American Revolution by bringing key foundational documents to communities throughout the state.” \nExhibit curator\, D. Andrew Johnson\, PhD\, noted that “since the South Carolina Department of Archives and History holds many important documents from America’s Founding Era\, we thought this would be an excellent time to have some of them on public display. We want this exhibit to add to the broader conversation the public is having about the origins of our country.” \nIn addition to the display\, Archives staff will provide a presentation about the documents at 6:30 p.m. in the Museum’s theater. While often overshadowed by events in the northern colonies\, the Backcountry was a contested and volatile landscape where Loyalists\, Patriots\, and British forces clashed in brutal and decisive engagements. \nDrawing on primary sources\, battlefield archaeology\, and recent scholarship\, Durant Ashmore will examine key battles of the Backcountry\, the leaders and dedicated militia who fought them\, and the civilian populations often caught in the middle.
