SUMMARY:Battleground Carolina: The Fall of Savannah
DESCRIPTION:A 10-month lecture series meeting on the first Tuesday at 5:30 PM of the listed months below.\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin historian Durant Ashmore in an engaging lecture series that explores the American Revolutionary War through the lens of South Carolina’s Backcountry\, a region whose people\, terrain\, and battles played a critical role in the struggle for independence. The series will highlight how guerrilla warfare\, local loyalties\, and geographic factors shaped the course of the war in South Carolina\, ultimately and directly influencing the outcome of the Revolution. \n  \n\nJanuary 6  |  February 3  |  March 3  |  April 7  |  May 5  |  June 2  |  August 4  |  September 1  |  October 6  |  November 3 \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLecture #4 – April 7 : The Fall of Savannah\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nRESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.

SUMMARY:Foundations of a Revolution: South Carolina\, 1775-1777
DESCRIPTION:The Upcountry History Museum is proud to be the Upstate’s only venue for the display of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History (SCDAH) exhibit\, Foundations of a Revolution: South Carolina\, 1775-1777\, on Thursday\, April 23\, 2026\, from 1:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. \nOn display will be three of the state’s original founding documents from the American Revolution. They are the 1775 Articles of Association for the District East of the Wateree\, the South Carolina Constitution of 1776\, and the 1777 Treaty of DeWitt’s Corner.\nThese documents are part of the vast collection documenting the history of South Carolina held by the SCDAH and are seldom placed on public display.\nDr. W. Eric Emerson\, SCDAH Agency Director\, State Historic Preservation Officer\, and State Archivist\, remarked that “the S.C. Department of Archives and History has a long tradition of making South Carolina’s historic records available to the public. The 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding is an excellent time to educate South Carolinians about their state’s crucial role in the American Revolution by bringing key foundational documents to communities throughout the state.” \nExhibit curator\, D. Andrew Johnson\, PhD\, noted that “since the South Carolina Department of Archives and History holds many important documents from America’s Founding Era\, we thought this would be an excellent time to have some of them on public display. We want this exhibit to add to the broader conversation the public is having about the origins of our country.” \nIn addition to the display\, Archives staff will provide a presentation about the documents at 6:30 p.m. in the Museum’s theater. They will discuss each document’s influence and place them in the context of their production. \nRegular admission for full Museum access will be charged from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. \n\nAdmission is FREE from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. and limited to viewing the Founding Documents. \n

SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning
DESCRIPTION:Backcountry Resistance: South Carolina’s Militia and the Fight for American Independence\n  \nPresented by Carl P. Borick\n  \nIn Backcountry Resistance\, Carl P. Borick delivers a groundbreaking account of the citizen militia that defied British forces in South Carolina’s volatile Backcountry during the pivotal Southern campaign of the Revolutionary War. When Charleston fell in May of 1780 and the Continental Army retreated\, many assumed the Patriot cause in the South had collapsed. In the state’s rugged interior\, though\, partisan militias waged a brutal insurgency that challenged British control and changed the course of the war. \nFocusing on rank-and-file militiamen\, Borick explores how these ordinary men were recruited\, armed\, fed\, and motivated. Drawing on underused pension records and state claims\, he reconstructs their everyday realities and their battlefield experiences. He also examines the war’s devastating effects on civilians\, including enslaved people and women\, who played crucial roles in the struggle. \nRichly detailed and grounded in the human experience of warfare\, Backcountry Resistance offers the most comprehensive portrait to date of South Carolina’s militia during the decisive years of the American War of Independence. \nCarl P. Borick is the Director of the Charleston Museum in Charleston\, SC. He received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Delaware and a MA in History from the University of Alabama. His previous publications include: A Gallant Defense: The Siege of Charleston\, 1780; Relieve Us of this Burthen: American Prisoners of War in the Revolutionary South\, 1780-1782; and The Charleston Museum: America’s First Museum. \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLunchbox Learning is generously sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Battleground Carolina: The Bloody Summer of 1780
DESCRIPTION:A 10-month lecture series meeting on the first Tuesday at 5:30 PM of the listed months below.\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin historian Durant Ashmore in an engaging lecture series that explores the American Revolutionary War through the lens of South Carolina’s Backcountry\, a region whose people\, terrain\, and battles played a critical role in the struggle for independence. While often overshadowed by events in the northern colonies\, the Backcountry was a contested and volatile landscape where Loyalists\, Patriots\, and British forces clashed in brutal and decisive engagements. \nDrawing on primary sources\, battlefield archaeology\, and recent scholarship\, Durant Ashmore will examine key battles of the Backcountry\, the leaders and dedicated militia who fought them\, and the civilian populations often caught in the middle. The series will highlight how guerrilla warfare\, local loyalties\, and geographic factors shaped the course of the war in South Carolina\, ultimately and directly influencing the outcome of the Revolution. \n  \n\nJanuary 6  |  February 3  |  March 3  |  April 7  |  May 5  |  June 2  |  August 4  |  September 1  |  October 6  |  November 3 \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLecture #6 – June 2 : The Bloody Summer of 1780\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nRESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.
