SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning with Dr. Vernon Burton
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Vernon Burton\, Clemson University \nTopic: Justice Deferred: Race and the Supreme Court \nFrom the Cherokee Trail of Tears to Brown v. Board of Education to the dismantling of the Voting Rights Act\, historian Orville Vernon Burton shines a powerful light on the Court’s race record during the short period spanning the 1930s through the early 1970s. Much of the fragility of civil rights in America is due to the Supreme Court\, but as this sweeping history also reminds us\, the justices still have the power to make good on the country’s promise of equal rights for all. \nLunchbox Learning is free for UHM Members and included with general admission for all other guests. \n  \nUpcoming Lunchbox Learning programs: \n\nOctober 13 – Even as We Breathe with Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle\nNovember 10 – War Dogs: Never Below You\, Never Above You\, Always Beside You with Julie Schrock & Chris Willingham\nDecember 15 – Home for the Holidays with the Norman Rockwell Museum\n\n  \n\n  \nLunchbox Learning is generously sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning: War Dogs
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Chris Willingham & Julie Schrock\nTopic: War Dogs: Never Above You\, Never Below You\, Always Beside You\n  \nSince the American Revolution\, military working dogs have served all branches of the United States Armed Forces. This unique exhibition not only highlights the significant involvement of these four-legged warriors in the military but honors the important role they and their handlers play in serving and protecting countless lives in conflicts across the globe. \nJulie Schrock\, Gold Star Mother of Corporal Max Donahue (USMC) and author of “Missing Max\,” will share stories about her son\, his “service over self” attitude as a Marine\, and his love of being the handler for Fenji\, his trusted military working dog. She will also detail her journey of hope\, faith and love through the days\, weeks and months following his injury and then his death. \nJoining Julie will be retired Master Sergeant Chris Willingham\, USMC. During his 20-year military career\, Chris served as a Military Working Dog (MWD) handler\, trainer\, instructor\, and program manager. Chris and his MWD Lucca conducted numerous operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and are credited with saving countless lives. Lucca led more than 400 missions during her career\, and no one was hurt until the day she herself suffered a severe injury on the battlefield. Retired from military service\, she now lives with Chris and his family. Chris is President of the United States War Dog Association which promotes the long history and unique work of these canine warriors. \n  \n“The Unknown Soldiers: Dog soldiers on after handler dies” \n“How Marine dog Lucca made history” \n  \nLunchbox Learning is free for UHM Members and included with general admission for all other guests.\n  \nGuests can attend the program in-person at the Museum or virtually. \n\n  \n  \nUpcoming Lunchbox Learning program:\n\nDecember 15 – Home for the Holidays with the Norman Rockwell Museum\n\n  \n\n  \nLunchbox Learning is generously sponsored by: \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Baptists and Bootleggers
DESCRIPTION:Baptists & Bootleggers: A Prohibition Expedition through the South with Kathryn Smith \nEveryone has heard of Prohibition\, the period between 1920-1933 when it was illegal to sell alcohol in the United States. But what happened in the South? We went dry before most of the nation did — and perfected rum-running\, moonshining\, bootlegging and other ways of getting alcohol to the public just in time for the curtain to go down on legal liquor sales. Historian Kathryn Smith will share the story from her book Baptists and Bootleggers: A Prohibition Expedition Through the South…with Cocktail Recipes. \nFree to UHM Members and included with your general admission for all other guests. \n  \n\n  \n
