DESCRIPTION:“We Didn’t Wait for Freedom” Civil War Narrative Quilts by Vera Hall \nExplore the history of the American Civil War through Baltimore trailblazer\, Vera Hall\, and her narrative quilt series\, “We Didn’t Wait for Freedom.” An activist in her own right\, Hall’s quilt series focuses on her interest in black history during the transition from slavery to freedom. \nWhile learning about some of these important historical figures\, families and visitors will also enjoy a very special presentation from SC Humanities speaker\, Gerald Pitts\, as he performs an original one-act play as President Abraham Lincoln. \n  \n\nWHAT: UHM Homeschool Day\n  \nWHEN: Friday\, February 16 | 1:30 p.m.\n  \nWHERE: Upcountry History Museum\n  \nHOW: February’s Homeschool Day is open to children in 1st-12th grade.\n  \nWHY: Explore narrative quilts from Hall’s “We Didn’t Wait for Freedom” quilt series and hear directly from Abraham Lincoln*\n  \nCOST: $10 per student & $12 per adult\n  \nUHM MEMBERS COST: $6 per student & Adults are FREE\n  \nPERFORMANCE BY PRESIDENT LINCOLN: FREE to visitors\n  \n\n  \n  \n\n  \n*The performance featuring Abraham Lincoln is free to any visitors\, however space is limited. DESCRIPTION:Resisting Jim Crow: The Autobiography of Dr. John A. McFall\nPresented by Lahnice McFall Hollister\n“Injustice… is a cancer that is rapidly eating into the vitals of our nation.” A newspaper reported Dr. John A. McFall’s words at an annual program on race relations at a Charleston church in 1936. The details of how Dr. McFall and many thousands experienced the transition to Jim Crow in Charleston is vividly told in the book Resisting Jim Crow: The Autobiography of Dr. John A. McFall. Found in the Fisk University Library—the manuscript was not originally intended for publication. Dr. McFall’s grandniece\, Lahnice Hollister\, edited and published it in 2021 because “few African-American voices tell our lived history.” \n  \nDr. McFall’s life spanned the years between the end of Reconstruction in 1878 and the Brown v. Board of Education decision in 1954. McFall’s emancipated parents had hoped for both freedom and equality for themselves and their children.
