SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War in the SC Backcountry
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, July 6 | Noon \n“The Second Siege of Ninety Six”\nThe Backcountry of South Carolina was home to 112 Revolutionary War engagements\, the greatest number in all of America. Beginning August 4\, join battlefield preservationist and historian\, Durant Ashmore\, as he discusses these Revolutionary War events\, on the first Wednesday of each month through August 2022.\n“First Wednesdays” will be a year-long lecture series at the Upcountry History Museum. Field trips to various war sites will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on a Saturday following the lecture. The lecture series is included with general admission to the Museum\, and there is no extra charge for off-site field trips.\n  \nRESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.\n\n\nRemaining Lecture Schedule – Noon\n\nJuly 6 – “Ninety Six”\n\nField Trip: Sunday\, July 10 at 2:00 p.m. – Ninety Six Battlefield\n\n\n\n\nAugust 3 – “Hayes Station”\n\nField Trip: August 6 – Hayes Station

SUMMARY:Lunchbox Learning - The Lynching of Willie Earle
DESCRIPTION:  \nConfronting Racism: The Lynching of Willie Earle \nPresented by Dr. William H. Willimon\, Duke Divinity School \nThis year marked the 75th anniversary of the Greenville\, South Carolina lynching of Willie Earle. Based on circumstantial evidence\, Earle\, a 24-year-old Black man\, was charged in the robbery and murder of Greenville cab driver\, Thomas Watson Brown. Upon his arrest\, a mob of taxi drivers drove to the jail\, forcibly procured Earle’s release\, then beat\, stabbed\, and shot him to death. The trial\, which gained national media attention\, resulted in the acquittal of 31 white men who had been charged with Earle’s murder. The death of Willie Earle would become known as South Carolina’s last recorded lynching. \nDr. William Willimon was a 1968 Wofford graduate\, former dean of Duke Chapel\, current professor of Christian ministry at Duke University\, and author of\, “Who Lynched Willie Earle: Preaching to Confront Racism.” Join Dr. Willimon on Wednesday\, July 20\, as he discusses the lynching of Willie Earle\, the subsequent trial\, and the continuing challenge of preaching to confront racism. \n  \nLunchbox Learning is free for UHM Members and included with general admission for all other guests. \n  \n\n \n\n  \n \n  \n\n\n\n  \nLunchbox Learning is generously sponsored by:
