SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War in the SC Backcountry
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, March 2  | Noon \n“The British Period: The World Turned Upside Down”\nThe Backcountry of South Carolina was home to 112 Revolutionary War engagements\, the greatest number in all of America. Beginning August 4\, join battlefield preservationist and historian\, Durant Ashmore\, as he discusses these Revolutionary War events\, on the first Wednesday of each month through August 2022.\n“First Wednesdays” will be a year-long lecture series at the Upcountry History Museum. Field trips to various war sites will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on a Saturday following the lecture. DESCRIPTION:Topic: Tribute to the Steam Locomotive Era \nPresenter: Carol Gibson \nJoin Carol Gibson\, a former North Greenville University instructor\, and explore ten of her original songs paying tribute to the steam locomotive era of the American Railroad.  Gibson will share the music\, lyrics\, relevant information\, photographs\, and history behind each song to give a vivid feel for the era and appreciation for the railroad in American history. DESCRIPTION:Witness to History: Selma Photography of Stephen Somerstein\nTwo thousand marchers set out March 21 along Route 80\, known as the “Jefferson Davis Highway.” After two failed attempts to complete the march\, President Lyndon B. Johnson dispatched federal and state troops to guard the demonstrators along the way to the state capitol\, 54 miles away. By the time the marchers reached Montgomery\, their number had grown to 25\,000.\nHearing of the events\, 24-year-old student photographer Stephen Somerstein jumped on a bus in New York City and headed to Alabama.
