An Environmental History of the Civil War
Presented by Dr. Timothy Silver, Appalachian State University
Dr. Timothy Silver is a professor of history at Appalachian State University. In his newest book An Environmental History of the Civil War, Dr. Silver explores the relationship of the Civil War with the natural world. Along with his co-author, Judkin Browning, Silver recognizes that the Civil War was not just a military conflict but also a moment of profound transformation in Americans’ relationship with the natural world. Environmental factors such as topography, weather, and access to natural resources heavily impacted both armies and shaped the outcomes of battles. Silver analyzes these factors and explains how the American Civil War led to advancements in meteorology, medicine, and veterinary sciences, and led to the start of the conservation movement, and establishment of the first national parks.
